Types of Cellular Carriers
There are two
network technologies in place with cellular
carriers and service. GSM, which is short for Global System
(for) Mobile Communication and CDMA, which means Code Division Multiple
Access. All major cellular carries use one or the other of these
networks. If you are aware of the differences between the two, it
will enable you to choose a cellular carrier that best meets your
needs.
Obviously the
most important consideration is that you have reliable service in
your area, with the least amount of dropped calls, and the most
amount of "bars" - meaning if you have full "bars",
you have cellular service, if, on the other hand, you stray outside
your provider's service area, you will not be able to receive or
make phone calls.
GSM Carriers:
Allow international (roaming) calls as they are predominate in today's
world market. If you travel abroad your GSM phone can be used. You
would simply buy a SIM card with minutes on it and a local number
in the foreign country you are in for pay per minute usage.
CDMA Carriers:
Are not card enabled, therefore international calling is usually
not an option. However, some overseas countries now have CDMA networks,
so if you plan to travel abroad and think you will need cell phone
service, it is a good idea to look into this ahead of time.
