What
is Text Messaging (SMS)?
Text
messaging is referred to as SMS, which stands for Short Message
Service and is a common feature with today's digital cell phones.
By keying in words (using the letters associated with the numbers
on your phone's keypad) you can send short messages (usually up
to 160 characters) to another person's cell phone. There is generally
a fee levied by your cell phone provider for SMS - the amount depending
on the provider. Sometimes if you pay a monthly plan fee, a certain
number of text messages are included in that price - the fee will
vary again from provider to provider for each message sent that
goes over the plan limit.
SMS can also
be used with handheld devices such as the Blackberry or via the
Internet with programs such as GoogleTalk, Yahoo Messenger and MSN
Messenger. In a nutshell SMS is the sending of a short message from
one point to another.
