The Future of SMS
What
is the future of SMS? The phenomenal (if unexpected) success
of SMS is well documented and now a widely used form of communication
both in the business world, as well as for personal use.
A very large part of the revenues cell phone companies are enjoying
today can be attributed to SMS. At the same time, people are not
necessarily in love with their service providers and it is important
that these companies take steps in the future to initiate client
trust and respect.
Besides being
a veritable cash cow for cell phone providers, here is some food
for thought. A bit of a revolution has evolved with SMS in terms
of how people interact and communicate with each other. The future
will see service providers and phone manufacturers inventing new
ways to create a greater variety of SMS services.
The introduction of MMS (Multi-Media Messaging Services) already
allows the consumer to add photos, video and sound to text messages.
This could prove to be even bigger for businesses than a simple
text message. MMS would offer more variety in advertising options
as well as being more interactive for the customer.
SMS should
also be more cost effective in the future, as providers compete
with one another for the biggest slice of the text messaging market.
The biggest
users of SMS, the current teen-20 something generation, will already
have good texting skills and will pass their knowledge on to the
next generation.
More and more
businesses are using text messaging today as an effective way of
interacting with their customers. The growth of this application
as a business tool will allow profits to be made from business and
industry. Once SMS applications are more customized to meet the
needs of the business community, (and they are evolving every day)
there is a large chance of an SMS business explosion as between
2000 and 2002 with the consumer.
Text messaging
has increased three-fold in the past couple of years, and the future
of SMS is looking very healthy, by all accounts.
